BootCareer
Hiring Platform for Bootcamp Graduates
Overview
Hiring is broken. Bootcamps are an affordable, accessible way to learn the skills you need to break into tech. Yet bootcamp graduates struggle to stand out in the sea of candidates.
How can we help bootcamp graduates own their stories and prior experience to land roles that allow them to shine?

The Challenge
Balance the priorities of candidates and recruiters to create a hiring platform that's intuitive and easy to use. Incorporate feedback into the process so candidates can grow and improve.
The Process
We conducted interviews with bootcamp grads, employees, and recruiters. Taking those learnings, we brainstormed features that allow bootcamp grads' interests and experiences shine through.
The Result
We delivered the candidate's profile, messaging, and job tracking screens to the development team. We created a design system leveraging Material UI to ensure design consistency.
USER RESEARCH
In order to form a robust understanding of the hiring landscape for bootcamp graduates, the team set out to conduct interviews with 25 bootcamp grads, 5 bootcamp employees, and 5 recruiters. Of the bootcamp grads, 44% were job seeking while 56% were employed. We chose to interview graduates from the design (44%), software engineering (40%), and data science tracks.
The best way to learn is through personalized, live feedback from experts on the topic.
Become that expert, with Swap.
Since our target demographic is young adults, our group also conducted user interviews from college-aged individuals with a variety of backgrounds. Our main findings were that people were less interested in learning technical skills from other people online and that some found the idea of meeting up with strangers in real life uncomfortable.
From this realization, we decided to focus our app specifically on skills related to the arts and to design the application so users don't need to meet in person if they don't want to. In doing so, we also realized designing for online experiences allowed us to include supplementary features that would allow Swap to double as a hub for useful tools while teaching.

After going through rounds of task-based user testing, we refined aspects of the experience such as improving the transition between stages and altered the wording of text or appearance of buttons to avoid confusion. We also adjusted the interface to be more intuitive when completing common tasks, aligned our visual styles, and tried to give Swap a simple but artistic aesthetic.
